Care for the Wild International (CWI) is an animal welfare and conservation charity that funds practical projects around the world. We make areas safe from poachers, rehabilitate sick or injured animals and provide sanctuary for those who can not return to the wild. We also act as a global voice for wildlife through research, education and advocacy and expose animal cruelty and wildlife crime.

HIS HOLINESS THE KARMAPA APPEALS FOR WILDLIFE CONSERVATIONread more >>

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh): His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje has appealed to his fellow Tibetans not to harm wildlife, at an awareness event organised by Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and Care for the Wild International (CWI).

“Animals are not our enemies. We are all interdependent; every animal has a role to play in the ecology by being a part of the food chain. If you remove one layer, the entire chain is affected. Even while talking in the interest of human beings, by saving wildlife, you are ultimately helping yourself,” said His Holiness the Karmapa, addressing the audience at the TCV Upper School, Dharamsala, the venue for the event.

“From the Buddhist viewpoint, we say every sentient being is a mother sentient being. We believe in bringing no harm to others including animals, but the ground reality is that this is being neglected. Some may believe that the environment is so huge that it cannot be affected by the action of one person. However, individuals can make lots of differences; the kind of difference, whether positive or negative, depends on the character and belief of humans,” His Holiness added.

Immediate danger of extinction for rare dolphins

With the announcement in early October 2008 of the latest IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which once again confirmed Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins as Endangered and Critically Endangered respectively, the prospect of the dolphins’ impending extinction looms ever nearer.

Recently released research from the University of Otago reinforces the sad truth that two of the world's most endangered dolphin species are disappearing at rapid rates. Gill netting and trawling have edged population numbers of both species perilously close to the brink of extinction.

Illegal Tiger Trafficking and Animal Cruelty at the Tiger Temple

A report released by Care for the Wild International identifies the Tiger Temple in Thailand as involved in illegal cross border wildlife exchange and animal cruelty.

Following the worldwide Animal Planet broadcast of a two-part documentary on the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, this facility has become a popular international tourist attraction. The Tiger Temple’s success is based around claims that its tigers have been rescued from poachers and live and roam freely and peacefully amongst the temple’s Buddhist monks. However, prompted by concerns expressed by tourists and volunteer workers, an investigation by CWI has revealed evidence of a number of serious conservation and animal welfare concerns, based on information collected between 2005 and 2008.

The International Tiger Coalition (ITC), comprising the world's foremost conservation organisations and scientists, speaks out against the Tiger Temple. Click on the following link to see the ITC letter sent to the Thai authorities:

International Tiger Coalition (ITC) Letter to Thai authorities

The letter highlights the negative impacts of international tiger trade, and details serious concerns regarding the breeding of tigers at the temple. It urges the authorities to remove the tigers to a CWI-sponsored facility, and requests that a full investigation into illegal breeding and exchange of tigers is carried out.
