Care
for the Wild International’s work to help
snow leopards is wide
ranging and is funded by our
snow leopard adoption scheme and
donations from supporters. As with all of our work we aim to make a
difference by providing practical help to aid animals in most need.
Only 4,000 to 7,000
snow leopards are believed to survive in all
of central Asia and the Himalayas. Already extinct in some of their
former range, the species as a whole is declining and is in danger
of becoming extinct altogether!
Threatened not only by destruction of their natural habitat and a
lack of prey due to hunting, snow leopards are being decimated by
poachers.
Snow leopards are trapped, killed and traded for pelts and
other body parts. They are also sold live to zoos, circuses and
private collections. |
Care for the Wild International provides sanctuary and long-term
care for rescued and orphaned snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan. We also
work with the German Society for Nature Conservation (NABU) to
protect
wild snow leopards from poachers.
Care for the Wild International has built a
Snow Leopard Rescue
Centre in Kyrgyzstan where confiscated and orphaned snow leopards
can be cared for and eventually returned to the wild. The animals
are guarded 24 hours a day to protect them from poachers.
Alcu and Bagira are two orphaned
snow leopards that live at the
centre. In 2003, Care for the Wild International funded the
construction of what is believed to be the world’s largest snow
leopard enclosure where the two leopards now live. |
Much
of the work we do is funded by our
snow leopard adoption scheme
which allows people to support these helpless animals. The rest of
our work is funded by donations from our supporters.
Our aim is to make a difference and help snow leopards
wherever they are in need which is why we are fighting to stop
poaching in Asia and the trade of
snow leopard parts all over the
world.
Our work with
snow leopards is just part of Care for the Wild’s
practical work to fight animal cruelty, promote animal welfare,
rescue and help animals in need and make a difference! |
